On Coming Back

Most folks who hang around me know I have a little problem with these tiny little things called gadgets. I enjoy just about everything about them: reading about them, carrying them around, playing with them, writing on them, figuring out how my customers would use them, unboxing them, developing applications for them, and telling others about them. I love  figuring out how gadgets solve real issues for folks like me, my neighbors, people I hang around with, folks I worship with and customers I serve.

Several years ago, a friend and I started a website and wrote news stories about gadgets – lots of stories. I was a newshound and was consumed with the entire mobile computing industry. I wrote reviews and editorials, filmed videos, recorded podcasts, and pushed myself to the limit every year covering the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Eventually, though, the toll of running a successful website and programming business, combined with the impact of Maggie’s constant health issues, were just too much. In December 2008, fresh off of a two-month long hospitalization stay and  heading into a hectic CES show, I was on the verge of having a nervous breakdown. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t sleep, I was having anxiety attacks, and my health was at the worst it had been in years.  So, I and several close friends began fervently praying that God would bring a buyer for that website and release me and my family from that burden. In February 2009 He did just that. Yes, in the midst of the worst economic conditions we have seen in decades, God heard my cries.

Something wonderful began to happen once God lifted that burden: Doctors eyes began to open up, Maggie started to heal, I rediscovered a love for writing, Saturday’s became real Saturday’s, Scripture came alive, and being together was finally about being together rather than something I could integrate into a video about some new-fangled gadget. God has been healing my soul, and it has been good.

Every couple of days I’ll get an email or a phone call from a reader or tech company wanting to know when I’ll come back.

I am back. I’m just not where you’d expect to find me.

Celebrating Another Birthday

Maggie turned 14 while we were on vacation. We celebrated in Clinton at my Uncle Brents house, as well as in Tupelo at our good friends the Watson’s house.
