A pretty pathetic parent

You know, we are self-centered bunch of sinners, aren’t we?

Just the other day, I was sitting comfortably in my chair watching CNN. Ahh…TV, a comfortable chair, a couple of slices of pizza, and a cold Coke – what could be better on a Saturday afternoon? Suddenly, Zoe, my 6 year-old little girl, burst in to the room and asked “Can I go outside and rollerblade?”

My thoughts immediately turned to “How does this affect me?” It meant I’d have to get off my butt, go outside and watch her, and give up my moment of self-centered, much desired leisure. I found myself immediately beginning to utter the words “No, why don’t you go in to the backyard instead – there is plenty to do there.”

Yep, I’m pretty pathetic!

But I stopped and asked myself a question: “Why Not?”. Instead of defaulting to ”no”, default to ”yes” unless there is a good reason to say “no”.  She’s not going to hurt herself and others, she’s not going to burn the house down, and she just might have some fun. So, I said “yes”, her eyes beamed with glee, and I got off my butt and went outside to watch her.

And wouldn’t you know it – I had a great time, got some much needed sunshine, and enjoyed being outside with the rest of my kids instead of sitting inside listening to Anderson Cooper’s wonderful words of wisdom.

We Want For Him

We want for Him
As a little one longs for her mommy,
Moving from room to room
Her little heart beating faster with each look.

Missing that soft whisper
From her mommy’s lips,
A tear begins to drop
In fear of what she may not find .

Longing for that touch
Her heart begins to slow,
As the smell and shadow of her comfort
Begins to fill the room.

Leaping into her touch
She becomes limp with relief,
That she was back in the arms
Of her joy and protector.

As she rocks the little one’s fears away
A gentle smile takes form,
Knowing that she was always in the room
Her smell and shadow but a glance away.

We want for Him
As a little one longs for her mommy.

One of the premier magazines of our denomination (PCA Presbyterian), is Modern Reformation. They produce a print magazine, as well as an online version ( ModernReformation.org ).

Last week, I submitted five articles hoping that one of them would catch their eye. I received word yesterday that they want to run all five articles in the Reformation Diaries section of their website. The articles will run in a five-week series. I have not heard when the first article will be published.

Stay tuned and I’ll post a link when they go live!
